Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year

I am so excited for all the wonderful things we are going to get to do this year and all the amazing things your child is going to learn!

I have 5 children of my own, and have delighted in watching them learn and grow (right here at Alta Sierra School also!)  As a mom and a teacher I love art, music, movement, reading, thinking, problem solving, science, challenges and creativity.  As a person beyond that I love long walks, massages and dark chocolate :)

I am so looking forward to meeting our new classroom full of friends.

2 more weeks of school before Christmas break!

Oh my, how quickly the year is going!
Your child brought home their report card today. It should be in their homework folder.  They have all grown so much already :).  I am impressed with each of them!
They are all doing a TERRIFIC job practicing for our Christmas program.  Make sure to mark your calendars, Wed. Dec. 14th 8:30 am for the dress rehearsal and then 6:30 pm for the final performance!
No math homework until after break.  We will be testing on chapter 4 next week and then introducing chapter 5-which is subtracting with regrouping (borrowing)!
We will have spelling next week, but not the following week :)
We get to be in our garden on Tuesday the 6th if it is not raining (or too muddy).
Our Mistletoe Mall time is Wednesday the 7th 9-9:45.  If anyone can volunteer to help with wrapping for our class during that time please let me know.  They are in need of a few more helpers!!
Up coming events:
12/10 Pancake Breakfast in the MPR - great fun and great FUNdraiser :)
12/10 Holiday free shop at Cottage Hill school. If you have new or gently used (gift worthy) things to donate please take them to CH on Friday the 9th.  Things we are not using (or don't fit) can be a treasure to someone in need!!

Hold on to you hats...the rest of the month is going to fly by :)

Thanksgiving

No homework this week!  I am just asking that the kiddos read for AR tests and be prepared to test next week :)  No math/No reading chart!

As we prepare to make our stone soup tomorrow we have also been blessed with an extra assembly.  The African Rhythms assembly has been rescheduled for tomorrow morning! SO IF EACH OF YOU ARE ABLE- PLEASE WASH AND CUT UP THE VEGETABLE THAT YOU ARE BRINGING TO ADD TO OUR STONE SOUP! Thank you so much-that will be very helpful :)

Parts for our Christmas program will be coming home tomorrow-please keep an eye out for them.  If you can have your child practice over the break (after Thanksgiving day of course) it would be very helpful!!

We will be back to math homework next week M, W, Th--we get to go to the garden on Tuesday during math time!  Remember to wear tennis shoes for that.

Thank you to our wonderful Parents Club for all the fun Jog-a-thon rewards that those who earned them will enjoy next week:  Balloon toss on Monday and Pizza lunch on Wednesday.  Your child has an invitation in their backpack if they earned either of these fun treats.

OCTOBER BREAK is Oct.17-21 enjoy your extra family time!

September is coming to an end!

As September comes to a close so does our study of Communities-our first unit in our new Reach Reading program.  We have learned a lot about different communities and neighborhoods.  Your children are reading machines :).  We are also closing chapter 2 in our math program.  We will not have math homework again until next Thursday!  We have some great mathematicians in our classroom!  I can tell they are practicing their rocket math at home.  It shows on their testing time and accuracy :-).
We have enjoyed several fun art projects that you have not had the pleasure of seeing yet.  But you will-and I am confident you will be impressed by your budding artists!
Reading homework continues as usual next week.
MOVIE night is this Friday night here at school.  Check out our website for more details.
Next week will be minimum days (12:00 dismissal) all week due to Parent/Teacher Conferences.  I am looking forward to meeting with each of you!  Thank you to our amazing volunteers working in groups each week--you have done such a terrific job I am going to give you next week off ;-) !!

Sept. 6th Already!

This is going to be a fast and fun week.
Tomorrow, Wednesday is our library day and remember, it is also picture day.  The forms went home last week-you must send the form back with your order and money if you would like pictures sent to school.  You can order online after picture day-but you have to pay for shipping :-/

This coming Friday is Jog-A-Thon. Pledge cards went home in last week's folders. Hopefully your family has been collecting pledges. The money raised at the Jog-A-Thon goes directly toward funding our field trips, assemblies and fun classroom projects and supplies!  If you would like to help with the Jog-A-Thon, we would love the help!!! We run at 8:50.  I also need two parents who are willing to stay and help to process the lap cards. Thanks! Please remember to have your kids wear cool clothes for running, and good shoes for running!

There will be NO math homework Wed. or Thurs. as we are already taking our end of the chapter test for unit one!

A big THANK YOU to parents and CONGRATULATIONS to kiddos. Almost every homework assignment was turned in last week.  An outstanding showing for the beginning of the year as we are getting used to the new routines.

Thank You

Thank you to all of you who came out to Back To School Night.  I enjoyed the opportunity to connect you the 'grown ups' in our classroom :).
I forgot to mention that we are looking for volunteers for our annual Jog-A-Thon coming up on Friday, September 9th.  If you are able to help please send me an email or a note to let me know.  Also-our garden needs a few extra helpers on Tuesdays anytime from 8-2. They say "No experience necessary-just sign up to come see our kids blossom in the learning garden!"

The reading unit we will be studying this next month is looking at the Big Question "What is a Community?".  As we read, study and learn about communities I would love it if your kiddo would like to bring in something from our community.  We have a large bulletin board to post pictures, magazine cut outs, drawings or other creative bits of information about our community. Of course if they/you have a connection with another community that they would like to share about that would be fine also.
REMEMBER our homework folders come home Monday through Thursday with a reading log and math page that need to be completed and returned the next morning.

First Week of School

We have had a wonderful start to second grade.  I am enjoying getting to know your students.  What a great group of kiddos we have :) We had our first math homework today!!  It should be completed and returned in their eagle folder tomorrow.  Hopefully our regular homework folders will be here soon!
I am looking forward to seeing you all at Back to School Night on Thursday evening in room 9.
