Updates from Room 8

What a great week in the classroom. We read about the Titanic in Scholastic News, worked hard in math and 95 Phonics, and finished the week with a Mystery Reader (be sure to sign up for a time when you can surprise your child and the class!).
Next week will no doubt be memorable at Alta Sierra. Students are encouraged to wear a costume to school Tuesday morning (leave weapons and excessively scary/bloody home for this one) to wear in the parade. We'll have festive activities throughout the day in the classroom - thank you to those who have already to send in items. You can do so here: Halloween
You are welcome to be here for the parade, and if you're able, please consider staying for our STEM activity that follows: building pumpkin catapults (the "pumpkins" will be orange pom-poms and construction supplies will include craft sticks and masking tape). It should be a fun time for all!
Wednesday, November 1, is a Professional Development day for teachers with no school for students.

Sign-Ups & Jog-a-Thon

Hello Families,
Please be sure you've signed up for the following:
If your schedule permits, we look forward to seeing you on the field this Friday at 10:35 to cheer on Room 8 runners and help mark laps as they run in the jog-a-thon

Updates 9/11

Hello families,
Today we finished a Scholastic News issue with a brief article remembering 9/11/01. We did not view the video - I wanted to leave this for families to view and discuss together if they choose to. It is accessible through your child's Google Classroom account.
Over the next few weeks, all PRSD students will have lessons on Digital Citizenship. All lessons are through Common Sense Education.
If you haven't already done so, please be sure to sign up for a parent-teacher conference. The link is in the sidebar of this website.

Updates 8/31

Hello families,
Students are continuing to learn and practice routines for the new school year as we have introduced additional parts of the curriculum this week.
Thank you for your support at home - most students have had their reading journals and math homework complete this week, and we have had practice "fishbowl" book talks to teach the routines that will be part of our reading journal follow-up each day T-F.
Sign-Ups
If you haven't yet had the chance, please be sure to sign up for a Parent-Teacher conference, and consider sign-ups to be a Mystery Reader and to schedule your child's Golden Eagle week. All sign-ups can be found in the sidebar of our classroom site.
Scholastic Book Clubs
The first Scholastic book order came home today in the Thursday envelope. This paper flyer gives a good start, but please be sure to look at the site https://orders.scholastic.com/HHHNQ for an extensive selection of books, with the option to search by interest, reading level, etc. Your child's reading level is marked with a sticker on the back cover of his or her reading journal. Place an order of $25 or more and you can pick a FREE $5 book (use code READS at checkout). Please place this first order by next Friday, Sept. 8, at 1pm.
Alta Sierra Spirit Wear Order
Be sure to place an order to support our school and turn Room 8 blue on Fridays! Purchase by Tuesday 9/5 to be entered into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card. Alta Sierra Spirit Gear Store

Room 8 Updates

Hello Families,
I am glad to have seen so many of you at Back to School Night yesterday. I look forward to a great year working together to guide and educate your children. Please be sure to take a look at the sign-ups I mentioned, all of which can be found in the sidebar of our classroom website (conference schedule, Mystery Readers, and Golden Eagles).
Have a fantastic weekend!

Homework Reminders

Hello Families,
Thank you for  your support of your children on their first day of Reading Log homework yesterday. We discussed again today that the homework calendar will be a place where we write homework assignments each day at school, so kids and families know what has been assigned.
Reading Journal
The instructions for this are also on the cover for future reference - this is the blue laminated reading journal. Students are asked to read a book at their level for twenty minutes. This can be independently or with an adult. They should then complete the box that corresponds to that day (today they'll fill in the Tuesday section on the page marked Week of August 21). We completed four sections of the blue sheet towards the front of the journal after classroom read-alouds together in class to be used as a sample.
A note on this - if your child is ever absent or forgets his/her reading journal, it would be just fine (and quite responsible - a trait we're working on!) to complete it on a separate piece of paper.
Today's Math
A quick clarification, because today's math is not a straightforward "page ___":
Today we had a great math period in which students folded papers with the following directions:
Blue: Fold the paper to make a square that is one fourth the size of the original square paper
Green: Fold the paper to make a triangle that is one fourth the size of the original square
Students volunteered to show what they came up with, and to defend their claim. They did a great job, with statements like "This is a square. I know because it has four sides of equal length. It is one fourth of the paper because it is one of four equal squares. I know because when I fold the paper, they cover each other perfectly."
Today's homework is to share this experience with a family member, with the challenge of folding the purple paper to make a triangle that is one eighth the size of the original square.
We had great conversations about fourths, eighths, and how to defend a claim. We even had students volunteer to share what didn't work - what a powerful lesson, and opportunity for a brief discussion about the fact that brain researchers have found that it is in times of struggle and making mistakes that our brains grow!

Welcome to Room 8!

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year. I look forward to a great first week of school as we embark on a positive year of learning and growth. I will continue to add to this webpage - please be sure to subscribe so that you will be notified each time I make a post or changes to a page. I look forward to meeting you and partnering as an educational team for your child.
Supplies
I have heard from some that the supply list posted may not have been up-to-date. Please do not worry about this...we'll work to make sure all kids have what they need. If you're shopping this week, some things you might pick up for your child's desk/classroom:
  • a pocket folder with a special logo/picture (sports, animal, etc.) to be used for "Work in Progress"
  • a box of washable markers
  • colored pencils
  • extra glue sticks (to be stored as classroom supply to replace as we go. The ones we're starting with are the .77oz. size)
