Regular Homework

*Read 20 minutes and record. Reading logs are due Friday.
*Practice Spelling words nightly.
*Math- We are working in our Math Book and and using  Xtra Math facts practice on the computer.

.

Extra Practice with our math concepts can be found online using the ISE under "Things to Do" and Skill Sets found in the "Library", click on the "Lady in the Red Hat." You can find these helpful web based tools on Student Links under "Think Central." The children have been practicing how to access these helpful tools, so they should be able to show you how to log on to the program.

Please check over your child’s math homework daily for accuracy and completeness. Studies show students learn better when they are given the opportunity to verbalize the steps taken to solve problems. Please allow your child this golden opportunity each evening when completing the math homework to explain to you their logic on a few select problems. If you notice an error, you will be able to catch it quickly before it becomes a habit that is difficult to break. Some of the concepts may seem tricky, so please know ANY strategy you show your child that works is worth learning and sharing in math class.

Xtra Math Fact practice is expected to be completed daily for points. If your child completes facts for 5 days/week they will receive 10 points (A+) for the week, 4 days = 9 points (A-), 3 days = 8 points(B-), 2 days = 7 points(C-), 1 day = 6 points(D-).

Reminder:

When practicing spelling words, it  helps to break the words down into parts (syllables) and focus on the sounds of each part.

August 28-September 4, 2020

Thank you so much for subscribing to our web page! The students completed their first FULL week of school! They learned so much and seemed to be enjoying school! I know I am really enjoying being able to spend time with the class in person!!! They are wonderful children! We are having a great time getting to know each other!

Hopefully you have seen your child’s agenda.  The students took home the "Work to complete on Monday and turn in on Tuesday for Attendance Credit" check-off slip. Please look for it in your child's yellow work folder. I was hoping I could help make things easier for you to monitor your child's work. Please initial work completed on the form and sign it. Return the form and all of the work to class on Tuesday.

We will begin spelling this week with word list 1.1 (fourth grade), and Grade 5, week 1 words (fifth grade). Students took home the word list today. I explained the procedure with the class and sent home a spelling contract with written instructions. The spelling test will be on Friday, September 4.

Home reading practice starts this week. Today our students took home their Red Reading Folders (fourth) and blue reading slips (fifth), and they will be due on Friday, September 4th. Students are expected to read for 20 minutes each night for five nights or more during the week. Reading homework is due every Friday morning, but I will need to glance at it on Tuesday so I know students read on Monday.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at Back to School night on Thursday, September 3 from 6:40-7:10. I will send the Zoom invitation to the home email you provided the school district as shown on Power School.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

Community Service Opportunity

Dear Families,

Many of our elderly have been socially isolating since the beginning of March.  I thought it would be nice if our students could do something to cheer them up.  Please encourage your child to draw cheerful pictures or make cards for these seniors.  You can deliver the art to school on May 11 when you pick up the new Distance Learning packets.  Mrs. Baker's daughter works at Eskaton and she will deliver the cards/art work to the residents.  She says this would really be appreciated as many of the residents are showing signs of depression.

Thank you for your support!  You all are amazing!

A message from the library...

There are still some kids with books out. Any students whose books are due in April don't need to be reminded. They are participating in the Wednesday library drive-thru.  Students can return books on Wednesdays from 4-6pm or you can give them my email so we can work out a time to get their books returned.

Thank you for helping me out,

Reminder...Zoom Meeting Tomorrow, Wed., April 29, 2020

A note to students: Please sign up in your Google Classroom to receive information to join us for a class meeting using Zoom. For those of you who have not yet signed up, Mr. Thompson sent me these instructions:

They have to use their student accounts. They don't have to accept the invite from Gmail. They just go to classroom.google.com and they should see the distance learning class with a join button underneath.

Once they accept, parents can be looped into the flow via parent invite. (Under the People tab, scroll down to the students and you will see an Invite Guardian link next to each student who has logged into the Classroom.)

I hope to see you at our next Zoom class meeting on Wed., April 29 at 9:00 a.m. It was so much fun seeing Brooke, Amy, Landon, Chloe, Mason, and Jacob last week. I hope more of you can join us next time! Please see your student gmail email for the log in information for Zoom. Remember...  PLEASE DO NOT SHARE MEETING INFO ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!  Thank you!

Math Lesson 11.3

Chloe sent me this question today:

I'm sorry to bother you on this nice day, but I do not understand Section 11.3 in math book #11. I will look up the ISE for it I just wanted to say I have asked (others for help and they don't understand). Other students may have not understood it either. Sincerely, Chloe

DearChloe&Class,
That is one of my favorite lessons! I wish I were in class with everyone to explain it! First of all, it would be helpful if you can get a protractor, but it is not totally necessary. You do not need a protractor in your hand to take the test. Just remember a straight line is 180 degrees, and a right angle is half of that (90 degrees). Watch the ISE if you can because it will explain it nicely. You can also find skill sets in the Think Central/Go Math "library" when you click on the "lady in the red hat" for fourth grade. Select skill set 44 and work through all four tabs below the box. Please let me know if this helps! I miss you all!

Art Docent Lesson on Wed., April 22!

I hope many of our students can join us and see their classmates together on the screen for a special art docent presentation on Wed., April 22 at 11:00 a.m.

Supplies: Paper (cardstock, water color, printer paper, anything you have available), some kind of scratch paper (this is do an example for practice), colored pencils, oil pastels, chalk, or watercolors, pencil, eraser, and something like a favorite object, a vase of flowers, etc that you can draw.

Time: Apr 22, 2020 11:00 AM Pacific Time (US and Canada)

PLEASE DO NOT SHARE MEETING INFO ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!

WHEN YOU LOG-IN, YOU WILL BE PLACED IN A WAITING ROOM UNTIL YOU ARE APPROVED FOR ENTRY. TO HELP MAKE THIS FASTER, PLEASE USE THE FIRST NAME OF YOUR CHILD (CHILDREN) AND THE LAST NAME OF YOUR TEACHER. (I.E. SUSIE - CORNEJO). IF YOU HAVE NOT USED ZOOM BEFORE, YOU MAY WANT TO TEST THE LINK (YOU MAY HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE APP). THANK YOU!

To Join Zoom Meeting, please check that you have signed up for our Google Classroom in your Student Gmail account. Mr. Thompson sent out invitations to join. April 20 - Distance Learning Packets!

Hello everyone!  I hope you are able to enjoy this beautiful weather and you are doing well!

Our second set of Distance Learning Packets are ready! Pick up times for Monday, April 20, 2020:

Last Name                                         Time

A-F                                            9:00am-10:00am
G-M                                         10:00am-11:00am
N-R                                          11:00am-12:00pm
S-Z                                           12:00pm-1:00pm
Open pickup                               1:00pm-5:00pm

You will find three weeks worth of work in the packet, with about two hours worth of work per day. Again, try to do your best with the work. We attempted to assign work students could do independently. Please remember you can email me at [email protected] with any questions or if you wish to check in with me. I am available to schedule a Google Meet with you and your child as well.

All materials needed to complete the work will be in the Distance Learning packet. In addition, online resources are an extra/option. If you are able to do some of the work online I am able to see your work! It makes me very happy to see how you are doing academically! I have noticed Amy, Jacob, Kacey, Madelyn, Anthony D. and Zachary have worked on GoMath using the ISE. Congratulations on completing the Chapter 10 Mid-Chapter Checkpoint and/or Chapter 10 test online: Dylan, Vance, Adelina, Brooke, Jacob, Amy, Sadie, Landon, and Brynna! There were many “Smart Kiddos” who completed the tests! You will need to ask your parents for your Smartie this time. This week Adelina, Anthony D., Claire, Kacey, Landon, Molly, Simon and Zachary logged onto Xtra Math for fact practice. So far Claire is the closest student ready to advance to the next fact level! Go for it, Claire! Thank you for practicing your spelling word lists. If you were able to do them online I noticed your work! Good job Claire, Jacob, Molly, Amy, Madelyn, Sadie, Jeffrey, Anthony D., Chloe, Brooke, Mason, Simon, Caylee, Brynna and Zachary for working on Spelling City.

To ALL of you, keep up the good work! I know many of you are working hard in your workbooks, Studies Weekly magazines and on paper. You make me so proud of you! I miss you all!

Library News:

Mrs. Alonso has been given permission to open a drive-thru library once a week.  Parents can follow this link https://altasierra.goalexandria.com/researcher and sign in to their child's account using their AR usernames and passwords.  They can then reserve books they would like and she will check them out to them.  Families can then drive-thru the school parking lot on Wednesdays from 4-6pm and Mrs. Alonso will have the books ready for them.  For safety, returned books will stay in quarantine for two weeks before being processed.

I will be returning all the library books including Mission Books that were left in your desks. You only need to be concerned with returning the books you may have at home.
