September 30 - October 4, 2019
Happy weekend to everyone! Spelling City word list 2.1 is in the system and ready to begin studying before next week!
Elections for our Classroom Representatives will be held in our classroom on Thursday, Oct. 3rd. We look forward to hearing speeches from Sadie, Molly, Anthony D., Cayden, Ethan C., and Brooke. After their speeches, the class will vote. Ballots will be submitted to Mrs. Boyes for counting, and then we will see who will be representing our classroom. Good luck, kiddos! You are ALL amazing!
Friday, September 27, marks the end of our mid-trimester. Grades can be checked on Power School. Please remember this is not the final grade for the trimester, and grades can go up or down before the end of the trimester on November 15 when grades are final.
Just a reminder, the week of October 7-11 are all minimum days for students so that teachers can conference in the afternoons. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and discussing your child's progress. Please remember to see the Sign Up Genius to select your time slot if you have not done so already. Parents who I have already met with do not need to sign up for a second conference. Thank you!
We are continuing to work on multi-digit by single-digit multiplication and multi-step word problems in math. This is SO difficult for students if they have not mastered their multiplication facts. If your child is still struggling to pass multiplication in X-tra Math, please support your child at home and practice their facts with them. Memorization of basic facts is essential to math success. In addition, PLEASE ask your child to use grid or graph paper to do the computation, and check their homework for accuracy. We will have our Chapter 2 test on multiplication this week.
We finished making our California Regions Maps! Yippee! Thank you to everyone who sent in clay! It was amazing!
Mrs. Yoho presented an Art Docent lesson and project last Wednesday! The students made amazing zentangle pumpkins!
This Friday is our Jog-A-Thon Color Run. Permission slips went home on Sept. 26 in the Thursday Folders. Only children who return the signed permission slip will be able to run the final lap through the color "wash". I participated in this last year, and it was quite fun! Wearing old white clothes works great to create a colorful look! The color stays on the clothing, so if you give permission to participate please remember to send your child in clothes that are okay to color for the run on Friday. Students who do not return the permission slip will not be able to run through the color.
Due to the Jog-A-Thon on Friday, we will need to cancel our library time. We will return to the school library on Friday, Oct. 11.
Thank you so much for all of your help and support!

Happy weekend to all!
Tonight, September 13th, is movie night! Hope you plan to come and watch the movie with your Alta Sierra friends!
We started reading our National Geographic magazine this week with "Vanishing Cultures" from remote places in our world. The students were intrigued and amazed!
Our PTC is once again asking that each family donate $20 for the year to help with the buses for field trips. If you could please send that in it would help our school so much. Our first field trip is planned in November. We are going to the Maidu Center in Roseville!
We will be doing spelling 1.3 this week. We have four activities on Spelling City to help students prepare for the test. Kids are doing a great job getting the Spelling City routine down! Please have your child practice every night, Monday-Wednesday. Our test is on Thursday. Only students who score below 70% will need to study again Thursday night for a retest on Friday.
Students are also doing a great job with practicing their math facts with our XtraMath fact program. Congratulations to Adelina for finishing the Xtra Math Multiplication facts and receiving her award! In order to participate in Mr. Biven’s reward party, students need to pass multiplication by November 15. We believe that all kids are capable of reaching this goal! Some students may need to do extra practice, but they can do it. Thank you for supporting fact memorization. This really helps with computation and all other concepts covered in math this year!
We read about California Regions this week and we are almost ready to begin our clay map projects. We need a parent volunteer to come in to help prepare the paper plates for this project in advance. If you are able to help in our classroom this week, please email me the day and time you are available. Thank you!
Band started this week. Students are riding a bus from Alta Sierra to Magnolia. If you would like your child to participate, please contact Mr. Richardson at [email protected] for more information about joining band.
We will be visiting the garden on Tuesday! Lori Long is our garden coordinator. Her work is so appreciated! We also need a garden helper! We go the third Tuesday of the month from 9:30-10:00. Please let me know right away if you are available to help with this! Again, we visit the garden this Tuesday, September 17, from 9:30 to 10:00.
Last week, we had a student council assembly where students learned about having the opportunity to run for classroom representative. Candidates need to have a 1-2 minute speech ready to give the class. The letter of intent to run for classroom representative is due on Wednesday, September 18. Students may also send in a poster to display in class prior to elections. Four students will be voted in by their classmates to become our classroom representative.
Thank you so much for all of your help and support!

Fun Day Tomorrow!
Wednesday (tomorrow) is our Fun Day! Kids are going to be out in the sun for most of the day and playing games in the sun. Please make sure that they come to school with sunscreen on and have comfortable clothes for playing and good shoes for running! Also, please send them with a water bottle so they can stay hydrated! It is supposed to be 88 and partly cloudy on Wednesday, so it could be pretty warm!
Wednesday afternoon is also our pizza party and kids will be watching a movie in either our class or Mrs. Hollister’s class. Please make sure your child brings back the permission slip saying that they are allowed to watch one of the two movies chosen. Thank you so much to the people who have signed up to help with supplies and volunteer for that day! All slots on the sign up are now full!
Science Exploratorium Tomorrow!
June 3-7, 2019
June 3-7, 2019
This is our last week of school together and I can’t believe how fast the year went by. I have truly enjoyed our class and I will miss their eager faces and desire for learning new things! They are all ready for Fifth Grade, and I hope they come to visit me next year!
Thank you families for volunteering to help with Fun Day! There are more slots to fill, so please see the sign up genius and help make this memorable event spectacular!
We will not have Spelling this week!
We will not have Red Reading Folders due this week, but students should read daily for fun! Please initial in their agenda when they read this week. We will also study math facts for homework nightly on the Xtra Math program.
Some students still have not returned their End-of-the-Year Fun Day Contract, and will not be allowed to participate unless they do. Please see your child’s agenda. I will ask them to write in it on Monday if they need to return the Contract.
We have one final very full week planned! We have Full Days of instruction on Monday through Wednesday. Monday is our Science Exploratorium Presentations from 8:30-11:30. Fun Day is on Wednesday. I am still looking for volunteers to help me with the Parachute and to pick up our pizza for Fun Day. Please see the sign up genius and volunteer!
We have minimum day instruction on Thursday and Friday. School will be dismissed at 12:00.
Looking Ahead…
Tuesday, June 4th PTC meeting in the library 6-7
Thursday, June 6th Minimum Day, 12:00 Noon Dismissal
Friday, June 7th Last Day of School, Minimum Day School Released at 12 Noon
Have a wonderful summer vacation! I hope to see you all next year!
May 27-31, 2019
May 27-31
I hope that everyone enjoyed their long weekend! It is too bad that the weather did not cooperate with us! However, our busy schedule was not affected. My son Dakota graduated from College with three degrees! Our boys' grandfather celebrated his 90th birthday! My eldest son, Cameron, and his beautiful bride Amanda flew in to join in the amazing Cornejo Family celebrations! It was a joyous weekend!
Thank you so much to the parents who were able to attend the 4th grade field trip! The kids had an awesome day in Coloma! I was so worried about the weather and very grateful it all worked out perfectly!
This coming week will go by fast! We have testing on Wednesday. This will be our last day of testing unless kids have make up tests to do. We begin testing at 8:15 in the morning, so please remind our students to rest well and come to class ready and on time.
We are trying to still have a routine in class and get work done! I have found that this is best for keeping the kids calm and encouraging good behavior. Without structure, things can get a little bit crazy!
Students must pass Xtra math facts in order to attend the entire Fun Day. Students will loose a portion of the rotations depending on how far behind they are in passing. I reprogrammed the Xtra Math system to allow for 6 seconds, not 3. Hopefully EVERYONE will have the opportunity to pass before Fun Day!
Please remind your child to have good behavior for the next two weeks. Students with over 6 refocus forms will start to loose Fun Day rotations. We want to end the year on a positive note, and having good classroom behavior is a big part of this.
We will be having our STEM Mini Exploratorium to Monday, June 3rd. We will be having this in rooms 17, 18, 19, 21, and 23 from 8:30-10:00 and then 10:40-11:30. Feel free to come check out what the kids have been working on during science groups. The kids will be explaining and demonstrating their science projects to the younger kids.
Our end of the year party will both be on Wednesday, June 5th. I will be sending a sign up genius soon asking for help with the Parachute and Pizza Party. All 4th graders will be watching a movie in the afternoon! The movie choices are PG, so we will be sending home a permission slip that will need to be signed in order to watch the movie.
This coming Friday is Crazy Hat and Hair Day!

Thank you everyone for visiting our classroom for Open House! The children were so proud sharing their best work with all of our families! I am so proud of them! They have learned so much in fourth grade! It was a wonderful evening for everyone!
We will resume with the CAASPP Math test on Friday, May 24. Please remind your child to eat well and be well rested for our test on Friday. Testing begins first thing in the morning, so please help your child arrive to school on time.
We will have spelling 7.3 this week AND next week. I am allowing the children two weeks to study for the test because of our field trip to Coloma on Thursday, and because of the Memorial Day Holiday on May 27. You will find the words and activities for unit 7.3 on Spelling City. Students will take the spelling test on Thursday, May 30 in class.
Due to the upcoming CAASPP tests in math on May 24 and on May 29, I highly recommend the students review math concepts on Think Central/Go Math under “My Library”, click on “the lady in the red hat”, and find skill sets to practice. Students can review prior skills, as well as find new concepts we have not yet covered including measurement, area and perimeter! Class Hero is also available to reinforce Geometry.
Red Reading Folders are due every Friday. Students should remember to read and record their daily entries in their red reading folder and have them signed by a parent. We had four students forget their red folders this week, so they will need to return the red reading folder on Monday. Please ask your child if this includes them.
Students will also need to return their Field Trip permission slip to Coloma, and their End-of-the-Year Fun Day Contract on Monday if they haven’t turned it in already.
We have another very full week planned! The garden is scheduled for Tuesday after lunch, weather permitting. Please have your child wear shoes appropriate for the garden on Tuesday.
We will go to the James Marshall Gold Discovery Site on Thursday. The bus will leave promptly at 8:15 a.m. or sooner if possible. It is a long, windy drive and we want to have as much time to tour the park as possible. It is an incredible place to visit! I can hardly wait!

I can hardly wait to see the projects the children have created!
Mrs. Yoho gave a wonderful presentation on print making this week! The children always learn so much about art appreciation from our art docent! This was our last art docent project of the year and it was amazing!
Unless your child was absent during testing last week, or they need more time to finish, we will not have any CAASPP testing this week! We will resume with the Math test on Friday, May 24.
