Regular Homework

*Read 20 minutes and record. Reading logs are due Friday.
*Practice Spelling words nightly.
*Math- We are working in our Math Book and and using  Xtra Math facts practice on the computer.

.

Extra Practice with our math concepts can be found online using the ISE under "Things to Do" and Skill Sets found in the "Library", click on the "Lady in the Red Hat." You can find these helpful web based tools on Student Links under "Think Central." The children have been practicing how to access these helpful tools, so they should be able to show you how to log on to the program.

Please check over your child’s math homework daily for accuracy and completeness. Studies show students learn better when they are given the opportunity to verbalize the steps taken to solve problems. Please allow your child this golden opportunity each evening when completing the math homework to explain to you their logic on a few select problems. If you notice an error, you will be able to catch it quickly before it becomes a habit that is difficult to break. Some of the concepts may seem tricky, so please know ANY strategy you show your child that works is worth learning and sharing in math class.

Xtra Math Fact practice is expected to be completed daily for points. If your child completes facts for 5 days/week they will receive 10 points (A+) for the week, 4 days = 9 points (A-), 3 days = 8 points(B-), 2 days = 7 points(C-), 1 day = 6 points(D-).

Reminder:

When practicing spelling words, it  helps to break the words down into parts (syllables) and focus on the sounds of each part.

We will be going to the garden tomorrow! Please ask your student to wear shoes appropriate for gardening. Thank you!

Jog-a-Thon Volunteers Needed

Please email me if you would like to volunteer during our Jog-a-Thon on Friday, September 30, 2022. I am looking for volunteers to tally laps as students run and to help with a few other things. Our class is scheduled to run from 9:15-9:35, but I will need you here at 9:00 to help pin tally tags onto students and possibly stay a bit beyond 9:35.

Thank you!

Power School

Dear Families,
Your student was taught how to access their grades on Power School in class today. Please have your child show you how they did it while it is still fresh in their mind. This is your opportunity to see any missing assignments that your student can complete and return for a better grade. Late papers receive a lower score than those turned in on time, excluding students who were absent due to illness. Scores are updated approximately every two weeks. Grades are not finalized until the end of the semester on November 18.
Thank you,
Mrs. Cornejo

Library Day Tomorrow!

We forgot to write in our Agendas today that we have Library Day tomorrow. Please remember to return library books to class. Thank you!

Mosquito Fire Donations

Here is a message I received from ASPTC. Thank you for your kindness.

Gold Country Cares (A facebook group that has really stepped up and helped the community and others in time of disaster) reached out regarding placing 2 donation boxes at the school to get donations for families affected by the Mosquito Fire (one is in front of the MPR and the other is in front of the library). They are asking for donations for school supplies, books, coloring books, and other kid activities.

Math Homework Help

We took our first math test on the CB today! You can check your child's scores right on their CB. The paper copy with their score will go home next week in the Thursday folder.

If your child has their Chromebook at home and knows their login information, then this is what they can do for extra help:

1. Go to PRUSD school web site
2. Click on Alta Sierra School
3. Click on Student Links
4. Click on Think Central/Go Math
5. Log in using his school Username and Password

Now they have other choices, they can either...

6. Select the tab labeled "Things to do"
7. Select the math homework desired listed as "ISE 1.____, Do if you were absent or if more help is needed." (For example ISE 1.3 is Comparing numbers and putting them in order-usually least to greatest.)

Your child will watch a Fox reteach the lesson.  It will be helpful if you can sit with them the first time at least to offer assistance as needed. It will take about 30 minutes. There will be questions to work through and to answer. If your child needs the word problems read to them, then there is a speaker icon to press. Press the arrow button on the bottom right when it flashes. If the computer is silent, there is usually something flashing that needs to be clicked on. At the end of the lesson you will see red and yellow whistles. If your child does the work indicated at the red and yellow whistles and hits the green button on the lower right corner that says, "turn in" when they are done, then I can monitor the work from my computer. In addition, I made the class a place value chart which I asked them to put in their yellow folder in their desk at school. Please tell your child it's okay to put it in their math book to take home and borrow the white board pen I gave them if they think it will help. Just remember to return it to class daily so they can use it as needed in class.

OR... They can...

Select the "Library" tab.
Find the lady in the red hat and click on her picture.
Then select a skill set to go with the concept your child needs the most help with. Work through all tabs and learn! Good job!

Cross Country

Hello Alta Sierra Families!

My name is Rosalynn Asuncion and I will be this year's cross country coach. This year the cross country program is off to a speedy start. If you have a child that is in 4th or 5th grade, they are invited to join Alta Sierra's Cross Country Team. Practices will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays and possibly some optional Friday's depending on the meet schedules. The practices will be held directly after school from 2:05-3:05. The league is still currently developing the meet schedule, but are looking to have around 5-8 meets for the season. The season will start next week on August 23rd and will end just before fall break in October. The first meet is scheduled for the week of August 29th.

Meet Information:
-The track is roughly around 1 mile in length and usually winds around through different terrain.
-For the race each grade races independently, separated by girls and boys.
-The first 20 participants to cross in each category will receive a ribbon/medal.
-There is no school transportation provided for the meets, so it will be the parents responsibility to work out getting their child to and from each meet.

Participation Information:
-Cross country is a running sport through different terrain.
-Participants will be challenged to keep improving their time and length of running.
-At practice the participant is expected to come with a good and willing attitude.
-Participants must come to practice with running shoes, water and proper running attire.
-Parents and participants will need to sign a code of conduct. (this will be handed out at the first practice)
-Each participant will get a jersey to wear for the meets. I believe the cost of the jersey is $10, but will double check and get a final answer hopefully by the first practice.

My goal as a coach is to help each child succeed and grow as a runner. If your child's goal is to be able to just run the whole mile without stopping or if your child's goal is to cross the finish line first, I will be there to help them succeed. In the past I have coached soccer and softball. This will be my first year as the head coach, but I have been helping out with the program for the last two years. I have two daughters, one in 6th at Magnolia and another in 4th at Alta Sierra.

Reminder: 1st practice is next Tuesday August 23rd @ 2:05. Following practice parents will need to pick up their child or if the child is in the after school program can join then.

I am excited to get the season started and looking forward to meeting some future runners!

Coach Rosalynn

Chromebooks

We had a wonderful first week of school together! The children are eager to learn!

Chromebooks went home today with loads of information. Please ask your child to show you their paperwork to complete, charge the Chromebook this weekend, and return the Chromebook and charger to class on Monday with the paperwork and check for insurance if you would like that option. Chromebooks and chargers will go home every day to complete assignments and to charge at home in the evening. Please return the Chromebook to class daily for classroom assignments. Thank you!

Back to School Night

Our time for Back to School Night is confirmed for Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 6:50-7:10 in room 23. This is an informational meeting for parents and ask that children remain at home if possible. I look forward to seeing you in our classroom!

AUGUST 15, 2022

Hi! I’m Mrs. Cornejo! I will be your teacher this year!

I am thrilled that you will be in my class this year! We are going to learn so many new and exciting things together. This is my ninth year of teaching 4th grade, many of these years have been right here at Alta Sierra School, so I think you can infer that I LOVE Fourth graders! I think it is the best grade ever! We get to learn about the Amazing State of California, Long Division, Fractions, Cursive, and a lot more!

I am very passionate about teaching all subjects, although MATH is my FAVORITE, and I enjoy using technology as much as I can. In fact, you can check out our classroom newsletter weekly on Edlio. All you need to do is press the subscribe button under my name on the school web page.

One of the things I think it is very important is to work together as a classroom family. We will be spending a lot of time together, so it is important to treat each other with kindness, respect, and compassion. I know that each of you have a different brain which means you think and learn differently. I am committed to helping you learn and grow and continue to develop as a person of good character.

Want to know a little bit about me? I have been married to Mr. Cornejo for 34 years! We have two sons named Cameron and Dakota, and both of them went to Alta Sierra School from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade! We have an amazing school and I am so happy to be here! I have a grey cat named “Gandalf the Grey” and he loves to follow me everywhere. I have a Koi pond and every fish has a name. “Dorado” is golden colored koi and she is very beautiful. This summer I went camping at Eagle Lake with my whole family and we had a really fun time! I learned how to paddle board!

I can’t wait to meet you and your family! We are going to have an amazing school year together!
